The Legacy of Urban Renewal in Oklahoma City...
Oklahoma City has a unique history unlike any city before it. Springing up overnight after the Land Run, the city quickly grew into a thriving boom town. In the decades that followed, Downtown OKC grew into a bustling city center. But in the late 1960's through to the early 1980's, urban renewal gutted much of downtown of its historic buildings. The downtown core has only recently recovered. Now, one of the buildings that survived urban renewal is under threat again. The Film Exchange building on SW 5th & Robinson is in the footprint of the city's Core 2 Shore plan and the city wants it removed.
